    This paper provides analysis to a generalized version of the coupon collector problem, in which the collector gets dd distinct coupons each run and she chooses the one that she has the least so far. On the asymptotic case when the number of coupons nn goes to infinity, we show that on average nlognd+nd(m1)loglogn+O(mn)\frac{n\log n}{d} + \frac{n}{d}(m-1)\log\log{n}+O(mn) runs are needed to collect mm sets of coupons. An efficient exact algorithm is also developed for any finite case to compute the average needed runs exactly.     Smear correction of highly-variable, frame-transfer-CCD images with application to polarimetry

    Image smear, produced by the shutter-less operation of frame transfer CCD detectors, can be detrimental for many imaging applications. Existing algorithms used to numerically remove smear, do not contemplate cases where intensity levels change considerably between consecutive frame exposures. In this report we reformulate the smearing model to include specific variations of the sensor illumination.     Detection of spatially structured scattering polarization of Sr i 4607.3 Å with the Fast Solar Polarimeter

    Context. Scattering polarization in the Sr I 4607.3 Å line observed with high resolution is an important diagnostic of the Sun's atmosphere and magnetism at small spatial scales. Investigating the scattering polarization altered by the Hanle effect is key to constraining the role of small-scale magnetic activity in solar atmospheric activity and energy balance. At present, spatially resolved observations of this diagnostic are rare and have not been reported as close to the disk center as for μ = 0.6. Aims. Our aim is to measure the scattering polarization in the Sr I line at μ = 0.6 and to identify the spatial fluctuations with a statistical approach. Methods. Using the Fast Solar Polarimeter (FSP) mounted on the TESOS filtergraph at the German Vacuum Tower Telescope (VTT) in Tenerife, Spain, we measured both the spatially resolved full Stokes parameters of the Sr I line at μ = 0.6 and the center-to-limb variation of the spatially averaged Stokes parameters. Results. We find that the center-to-limb variation of the scattering polarization in the Sr I line measured with FSP is consistent with previous measurements. A statistical analysis of Stokes Q/I (i.e., the linear polarization component parallel to the solar limb), sampled with 0.16″ pixel-1 in the line core of Sr I reveals that the signal strength is inversely correlated with the intensity in the continuum. We find stronger linear polarimetric signals corresponding to dark areas in the Stokes I continuum image (intergranular lanes). In contrast, independent measurements at μ = 0.3 show a positive correlation of Q/I with respect to the continuum intensity. We estimate that the subregion diameter responsible for the excess Q/I signal is on the order of 0.5″-1″. Conclusions. The presented observations and the statistical analysis of Q/I signals at μ = 0.6 complement reported scattering polarization observations as well as simulations. The FSP has proven to be a suitable instrument to measure spatially resolved scattering polarization signals. In the future, a systematic center-to-limb series of observations with subgranular spatial resolution and increased polarimetric sensitivity (<10-3) compared to that in the present study is needed in order to investigate the change in trend with μ that the comparison of our results with the literature suggests.Fil: Zeuner, F..     Consumptive water use at the Mirage Hotel and the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada

    The Las Vegas Valley is one of the driest regions in the southwest United States. Due to limited water supplies from the Colorado River, rainfall, and groundwater sources, the water requirements of the valley’s growing population is slated to surpass the current available water supply. The purpose of this comparative study is to quantify the amount of consumptive water used at a major Las Vegas resort/casino in one year. This, being of importance, because of the resort/casino industry’s role as one of the largest, most visible, and most resource intensive industries in the Las Vegas valley. The goal of this project is to study the impact of this industry’s consumptive water usage on the overall water availability in the Las Vegas valley. This project was completed by researching case studies and reports of water use in related industries, water consumption and sewer outflow records, and water conservation literature. The results of the study show that consumptive water use at the Mirage Hotel and the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino is much less than previously estimated, concluding that the impact this industry makes on the available water supply for the Las Vegas valley is also much smaller than previously estimated

    Migration of Ca II H bright points in the internetwork

    The migration of magnetic bright point-like features (MBP) in the lower solar atmosphere reflects the dispersal of magnetic flux as well as the horizontal flows of the atmospheric layer they are embedded in. We analyse trajectories of the proper motion of intrinsically magnetic, isolated internetwork Ca II H MBPs (mean lifetime 461 +- 9 s) to obtain their diffusivity behaviour. We use seeing-free high spatial and temporal resolution image sequences of quiet-Sun, disc-centre observations obtained in the Ca II H 3968 {\AA} passband of the Sunrise Filter Imager (SuFI) onboard the Sunrise balloon-borne solar observatory. Small MBPs in the internetwork are automatically tracked. The trajectory of each MBP is then calculated and described by a diffusion index ({\gamma}) and a diffusion coefficient (D). We further explore the distribution of the diffusion indices with the help of a Monte Carlo simulation. We find {\gamma} = 1.69 +- 0.08 and D = 257 +- 32 km^2/s averaged over all MBPs. Trajectories of most MBPs are classified as super-diffusive, i.e., {\gamma} > 1, with the determined {\gamma} being to our knowledge the largest obtained so far. A direct correlation between D and time-scale ({\tau}) determined from trajectories of all MBPs is also obtained. We discuss a simple scenario to explain the diffusivity of the observed, relatively short-lived MBPs while they migrate within a small area in a supergranule (i.e., an internetwork area). We show that the scatter in the {\gamma} values obtained for individual MBPs is due to their limited lifetimes. The super-diffusive MBPs can be well-described as random walkers (due to granular evolution and intergranular turbu- lence) superposed on a large systematic (background) velocity, caused by granular, mesogranular and supergranular flows.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, 3 table
